One man was killed and several more were feared dead after an avalanche hit a ski resort outside Kazakhstan's commercial capital Almaty, the emergency agency said Monday.

The avalanche, triggered by heavy snow, buried up to 10 skiers and workers at the Shymbulak ski resort on Saturday, the Emergency Agency said.

Four skiers managed to dig themselves out of the snow, the agency said. Rescuers Saturday recovered the dead body of one resort worker, it said.

The death toll was likely to rise, the agency said. The search for other victims was suspended Saturday evening and wasn't resumed until Monday because of poor weather conditions and the possibility of another avalanche, the agency said, reports the AP.
