Russia and Georgia signed agreements Friday setting a timetable for the withdrawal of Russian troops and military equipment, news agencies reported. Georgia and Russia last year reached agreement that all Russian military facilities that remained in Georgia following the Soviet era would be closed by the end of 2008.

Under the new agreements, most heavy military equipment is to be withdrawn by the end of this year, and the base at Akhakali is to be transferred to Georgian control by the end of 2007, the reports said. The other base, in Batumi , is to be turned over to Georgia by the end of 2008, reports the AP.
