Militants attacked a U.S.-led coalition base in southern Afghanistan on Wednesday and an ensuing firefight killed two foreign troops and at least 12 rebels, the U.S. military said.
Four foreign troops and an Afghan soldier also were wounded in the battle in Helmand province, the military said in a statement. The region is a hotbed of insurgency and the booming trade in illegal drugs.
One of the two foreign soldiers killed was an American, but the nationality of the other was not identified, reports the AP.
