Spanish police have arrested nearly 300 Romanians in connection with a wave of violent burglaries, drug trafficking and prostitution, the Interior Ministry said Friday.

A ministry statement said 283 were arrested in raids in eight Spanish regions while 14 were detained in Romania.

The investigation by Spanish and Romanian police began last September.

The gang in Spain allegedly had connections with other Romanian groups in other European countries. The Spanish branch was said to be controlled by a man identified only as Iorgu I., also known as Talanu, reports the AP.
