News agency reports riots in Jordanian prison

Prisoners rioted in a Jordanian prison overnight but there were no immediate reports of injuries, the official Petra news agency said Wednesday.

According to Petra, which quoted an unnamed security official, a number of prisoners took some of the guards hostage to demand that friends jailed in another prison be transferred to their facility.

There were no other details provided, but Petra said that Juweideh prison officials intervened to end the riot and free the hostages. It said negotiations with the prisoners are still going on, but did not elaborate.

Petra said the official denied media reports that two prisoners had been killed, reports the AP.
