Fifteen masked gunmen stormed the government office in this southern Gaza Strip town early Wednesday, protesting the appointment of Rafah's new governor.

The protesters said they were upset because the governor, Zuhdi Qudra, is not a resident of Rafah. Qudra, a former PLO ambassador to Egypt who is from Gaza City, was appointed by Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas last week.

There were no immediate reports of violence.

Gaza has been riven by chaos and lawlessness in the wake of Israel's withdrawal from the area last summer, reports the AP.
