Snow in Lisbon

First time in fifty years snow has fallen in Portugal’s capital for the first time in fifty years, the result of a cold wave which brought the temperature down below freezing in nine of the country’s eighteen districts.

With minimum temperatures plummeting to tree degrees below freezing in Braganza, Vila Real, Viseu and Braga and minus seven in Guarda, the Meteorological Institute declared a yellow alert in Portugal, a country which is used to seeing snow on the hills in the center and north but not in the seaside capital city.

Snow began to fall at 15.00 local time in Lisbon yesterday, stopping half an hour later. Despite the fact that it did not settle, nevertheless it was enough to awaken the memories of the older residents, who can just remember the last time snow fell in the city over fifty years ago, a snowfall which was much more intense and which settled for several days, reports Pravda.
