Sotheby's sells rare Rembrandt and Donatello to American buyers

A painting by &to=http://english.pravda.ru/culture/2000/12/23/1633.html' target=_blank>Rembrandt and a sculpture by Donatello _ both masterpieces that had been altered and painted over _ sold at auction Thursday to buyers in the United States.

Donatello's 15th-century "Borromeo Madonna" is going to the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, which paid more than $4.4 million (Ђ3.59 million) for the terra-cotta sculpture of a Madonna and child that is considered a major work by the Italian master. Its pre-sale estimated worth was $4 million (Ђ3.26 million) to $6 million (Ђ4.9 million).

Rembrandt's "Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet" _ with a pre-sale estimate of $3 million (Ђ2.45 million) to $4 million (Ђ3.26 million) _ was sold to a private New York collector for $4.3 million (Ђ3.51 million).
