U.S. takes no stance on Chirac stand on nuclear weapons

The State Department withheld judgment Thursday on the statement by French President &to=http://english.pravda.ru/politics/2002/06/12/30185.html' target=_blank>Jacques Chirac that his country could use nuclear weapons to counter a state-sponsored terrorist attack.

"Decisions and actions that involve use of force and the military are the gravest decisions any leader can take in defense of the country and defense of the people," spokesman Sean McCormack said.

Such decisions are solely for a country's leaders to make, he said.
