Bus accident in Pakistan: 1 killed, 19 rescued

A bus carrying 39 passengers was struck by a landslide apparently loosened by this week's rains in northwestern Pakistan, injuring 19 passengers and killing one person, police said Friday. The accident happened late Thursday on a mountainous road in Kohistan, a town about 350 kilometers (220 miles) northeast of Peshawar, said Zarin Khan, an area police official.

He said nine people were still trapped in the wreckage of the bus, and "we don't know how many among them are alive." Khan said the injured and the dead person had been transported to a government hospital and rescue work was underway.

Fatal road accidents are common in Pakistan; many are blamed on drivers' widespread disregard for traffic rules, reports the AP. I.L.
