Chicago institution The Berghoff Restaurant closing after 100 years

For generations, tourists and traders, shopkeepers and lawyers with a craving for apple strudel or a stein of cold German beer have sidled up to the bar at The Berghoff Restaurant, a downtown &to=http://english.pravda.ru/main/2001/09/11/14878.html' target=_blank>Chicago institution whose owners announced Wednesday will close after 107 years in business.

The restaurant was founded by German immigrants who came to America in the 19th century.

It is the second blow to a city and a downtown already reeling from the news that its venerable Marshall Field's downtown department store will be renamed Macy's after being bought by the Cincinnati-based Federated Department Stores Inc.

"We share the sadness that many feel about the closing of the restaurant," Herman Berghoff, 70, who owns the restaurant along with his wife, Jan, said in a statement. "It's been an honor to be part of the fabric of Chicago, but after being in the business for over a half century, Jan and I feel that now is the right time to start a new chapter in our lives."
