Unidentified assailants hurled three bombs at a tea shop in a market in western Bangladesh, killing a ruling party politician and wounding his three friends, police said Monday. Kajal Mahmud, a local leader of the governing Bangladesh Nationalist Party, was killed instantly in the attack late Sunday in Meherpur district, a local police official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters.
Mahmud and three friends were having tea at the shop in a village market when about four masked men threw the bombs at them, the official said. The friends were injured and admitted to the hospital. No one claimed responsibility for the attack. Police said they were investigating. Meherpur is about 175 kilometers (110 miles) west of national capital Dhaka, reports the AP. I.L.
