U.S. House moves to tighten immigration law at border, workplace

The House of Representatives struggled Friday over how best to slow illegal immigration. The legislation seen as a prelude to a more difficult debate next year about what to do with 11 million undocumented people already in the country.

The legislation, advertised as a bill to augment border protection, anti-terrorism and illegal &to=http://english.pravda.ru/society/2002/08/23/35127.html' target=_blank>immigration control, includes such ideas as enlisting military and local law enforcement help to stop illegal entrants and requiring employers to verify the legal status of workers. It authorizes construction of a fence along parts of the U.S.-Mexico border.
