Israeli troops kill Palestinian farmer in Gaza

Israeli soldiers on Tuesday shot and killed a 45-year-old Palestinian who was working near the Gaza Strip's border with Israel, Palestinian hospital officials said. The Palestinian officials said troops in a tank shot Mohammed Fara of the village of Abbasan. Relatives said Fara was working in his marble factory some 600 meters (yards) from the border fence when soldiers fired on him.

The army said it had not fired tank or artillery fire in the area in the previous 24 hours. The army said troops fired in the air when a person neared the fence, but the man left the area and the incident ended. Palestinian security officials have not filed a complaint with the liaison office, as is customary in such incidents, the army added.

Witnesses said tanks patrolling the Israel-Gaza border fired sporadically throughout the night and morning because heavy fog prevented soldiers from determining whether Palestinians were trying to infiltrate Israel, reports the AP. I.L.
