London police chief says anti-terror operations up 75 percent

London's police force stepped up its anti-terrorist operations by 75 percent following the deadly bomb attacks on the transit system in July, its chief said Monday. Sir Ian Blair, commissioner of Metropolitan Police, told a conference in London that counterterrorism officers were now receiving high-grade intelligence reports on a daily rather than monthly basis.

Four suspected suicide bombers killed 52 bus and Underground passengers in coordinated attacks on July 7. "Since then we have had an increase of 75 percent in the operations we are carrying out. We are now further flat-out than we could have ever imagined ourselves to be," Blair said.

"There are people in the U.K. as we speak who are planning mass atrocities and who will use suicide as a weapon," Blair added. "That is a different place to where we have been in my lifetime and in my service." Jenny Jones, a member of the Metropolitan Police Authority, told the conference she had recently received a briefing about the terrorist threat. "If you knew what we knew you would really be scared," Jones said, reports the AP. I.L.
