Chinese prime minister discusses with Czech president international issues

Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao met with Czech President Vaclav Klaus on Friday to discuss bilateral and international issues, an official said. In their one-hour meeting at the end of Wen's two-day visit to Prague, Klaus praised China's achievements in many fields in last 25 years, Czech presidential spokesman Petr Hajek said in a statement.

Klaus also expressed his hopes that changes would take place in other fields, such as the development of democracy in China, the statement said. Wen assured the Czech president that reforms, including political reforms, would continue to take place in China, it said.

Wen also said China was interested in a dialogue over human rights with the European Union, as well as with the Czech Republic, the statement said. The two also tackled economic issues. On Thursday, a new Czech-Chinese bilateral treaty on investment protection was signed, as well as a memorandum of understanding between the Czech government and Changhong, China's leading producer of consumer electronics. The company is planning to invest at least US$10 million (Ђ8.5 million) in a new plant in Nymburk, 50 kilometers (31 miles) east of Prague.

Also, Czech privately held financial group PPF signed a joint-venture deal with Changhong to offer consumer loans in China, and an agreement between the Czech car manufacturer Skoda Auto and Shanghai Volkswagen has also been signed. The Czech Republic is the third stop of Wen's European trip, after France and Slovakia. He is scheduled to wind up his trip in Portugal later in the week, informs the AP. N.U.
