Afghans still smuggle heroin

Tajik border guards arrested an Afghan man for allegedly trying to smuggle 268 pounds of heroin across the Tajik-Afghan frontier.

Border guards fired on a group illegally crossing the border near Parkhar, according to officials.

"One man, an Afghan citizen, was detained. The others managed to escape, leaving behind 112 plastic bags with heroin weighing over 120 kilograms," said Abdulsattor Gulakhmatov, press secretary of the Tajik state border guard committee.

Tajik border guards have seized about 1.65 tons of drugs, mostly heroin, this year, UPI reports.
