Chief Norwegian truce monitor sees no threat to Sri Lanka-Tamil rebels cease-fire

The chief of the Norwegian-led cease-fire monitoring group said Sunday he saw no threat to the truce between the Sri Lankan government and Tamil Tiger rebels ahead of a highly anticipated speech by the top rebel leader.

Top Tamil Tiger leader Velupillai Prabhakaran was set to deliver a major speech Sunday, two days after Sri Lanka's new president, Mahinda Rajapakse, rejected rebel aspirations for an autonomous homeland for ethnic minority Tamils in the northeast and promised to overhaul a 2002 cease-fire, AP reports.
