Japanese space probe succeeds in landing on asteroid

A Japanese space probe has succeeded in landing on an asteroid and apparently collected samples, Kyodo News agency reported Saturday.

The Hayabusa probe is aiming to be the first to collect samples from an asteroid and return them to Earth for analysis.

Hayabusa touched down on the asteroid for a second time Saturday morning, Kyodo said, citing the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.

On Wednesday, the agency announced the probe had successfully landed on Sunday, after initially announcing the earlier attempt had failed.

The asteroid, named Itokawa, is 290 million kilometers (180 million miles) from Earth, reported AP. P.T.
