Spanish police arrest Argentine 'dirty war' suspect

Spanish police today arrested an Argentine man who faces kidnapping charges stemming from his country's "dirty war" against leftist dissent, court officials said. They identified him as Juan Carlos Fotea and said he was accused of kidnapping a man in 1977 and taking him to a naval school that was a notorious torture center during the 1976-83 Argentine military rule.

Fotea appeared Thursday before a Spanish judge, and said he would oppose Argentine efforts to have him extradited for trial. He said he had carried out the kidnapping on orders from superiors, the AP reports. It was not immediately known if Fotea lived in Spain or was simply visiting.
