Immigration agents have broken up a human smuggling ring in Orange County, indicting eight men who allegedly helped bring in up to 100 undocumented immigrants a month, an official said.
Five of the eight were arrested Tuesday in Orange County while another was arrested in Tucson, Arizona, Kumar Kibble, assistant special agent-in-charge of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Orange County, said Wednesday.
One was arrested in Phoenix in September on unrelated smuggling charges, and two remain at large, said Kibble. Those arrested included the alleged ringleader, 42-year-old Emilio Mayorales.
Kibble said the group organized the smuggling of aliens into the United States across the Arizona-Mexico border, then arranged their transportation to California.
They have been charged with five counts of conspiracy to transport and harbor illegal aliens, and face up to 10 years in prison, AP reports.
