Two killed in flooding in Indonesia's Aceh province

Flash floods and landslides crashed into several villages in Aceh province after days of heavy rain, killing at least two people and injuring 22 others, police and hospital officials said Wednesday.

"Looking at the conditions, there is a likelihood of more dead," said police Sgt. Mutarudin. "All our forces are now looking for survivors."

The water and mud crashed into scores of houses in Semadan village and nearby hamlets in southern Aceh district late Tuesday after days of heavy rain, said Mutarudin, who goes by a single name.

Hundreds of police and villagers were digging through the debris early Wednesday, he said.

At least two people were killed and 22 people were injured, two of them seriously, said Dr. Ramulia, from the nearby Kutacane Hospital. Raumalia also uses only one name.

Hundreds of families had fled their destroyed villages and were now sheltering at Kutacane's airport and sport stadium, said local government official Rachmat Fadli.

Heavy tropical downpours cause dozens of landslides and flash floods each year in Indonesia.

Aceh is still recovering from a massive earthquake on Dec. 26 that triggered a tsunami, which killed more than 131,000 people and left more than 500,000 homeless.
