Denmark: newborn prince makes his first public appearance

Denmark's newborn prince made his first public appearance Tuesday, sleeping soundly on the arm of his mother, Australian-born Crown Princess Mary, as the royals left a Copenhagen hospital. Mary and her husband, Crown Prince Frederik, waved and smiled to the scores of journalists waiting at the hospital, but the 3-day-old baby prince appeared oblivious to the commotion.

The palace had banned the use of flash photography for the royal family's departure from the Copenhagen University Hospital, which was broadcast live on Danish television.

Walking down a hall decorated with red and white balloons - the colors of the Danish flag - Frederik and Mary declined to say what the boy would be named.

However, it is likely to be Christian, in line with a 446-year-old Danish tradition of alternating between Christian and Frederik as names for kings in Europe's oldest reigning monarchy, the AP reports.

Speaking of her son's personality, Mary said "he has a very quiet mind."

With Frederik at the wheel of a four-wheel drive, the family drove off to Fredensborg Castle, north of the Danish capital. The couple briefly posed outside their home, before they walked inside with Mary putting her arm around Frederik who was carrying their son. The child is second in line to the throne, after Frederik, Queen Margrethe's oldest son. A.M.
