Daughter of U.N. official killed in Chile

The daughter of a U.N. official killed during the former dictatorship of Gen. Augusto Pinochet demanded on Monday that the United Nations investigate whether one of the top peacekeepers in Haiti is responsible for covering up the murder.

Carmen Soria said that Gen. Eduardo Aldunate, a Chilean who is now the deputy commander of the international peace force in Haiti, worked for Pinochet's security service "next to people who were directly involved in the assassination of my father, so he may be at least responsible for the cover-up."

Soria met with Spanish Ambassador Jose Antonio Martinez on Monday to ask the Spanish government's support for a U.N. probe of the case. In a brief interview from Haiti with Radio Cooperativa of Santiago, Aldunate denied any wrongdoing.

Carmelo Soria, who worked for the Santiago-based U.N. Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, ECLAC, was killed in 1975. An official report after civilian rule was restored in 1990 determined that the killing was the work of Pinochet's secret police.

Authorities have denied that Aldunate had anything to do with the assassination, although they admitted he did work for some time for the security service, after the assassination took place, and never as an operative agent, AP reports.
