Albanian Police find 370 kilograms of marijuana destined for Greece

Albanian police seized a large marijuana shipment in an area near the Greek island of Corfu, authorities said Monday. Police found the 370 kilograms (816 pounds) of marijuana on a speedboat on Saturday, but the suspected smugglers had escaped, according to a police statement. Investigators said the drugs were on their way to Corfu, it said. Drug smuggling from Albania, which produces marijuana and is a smuggling route for heroin, is widespread along the rugged border with Greece because of police corruption, a weak judiciary and lax border controls.

The European Union and NATO have told Albania to improve its fight against drug trafficking if it wants to eventually join both organizations, reports the AP. I.L.
