Mexico's Federal Agency arrest eight members of extensive migrant smuggling network

Mexico's Federal Agency of Investigation has arrested eight members of a migrant smuggling network that operated from the U.S. border to Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, the federal attorney general's office announced Sunday.

The arrests were made on Saturday in and around the northern Mexico city of Monterrey. Documents were seized including 20 Mexican passports, 30 voter registration cards and 95 U.S. temporary residency permits, according to a news release from Mexican prosecutors.

The arrests came after three illegal migrants detained in Laredo, Texas, identified a couple who supplied visas from a house in the northern city of Monterrey to Mexicans attempting to reach the United States.

The smuggling network allegedly operated in the Mexican states of Nuevo Leon, Coahuila, Guanajuato, Quintana Roo, Durango, Michoacan, Queretaro and Tamaulipas, reports the AP. I.L.
