Russia: suspect in Uzbekistan uprising released in Ivanovo

A Russian court on Tuesday ordered the release of a man held in custody as a suspect in a May uprising in Uzbekistan, a rights activist said.

A regional court in the city Ivanovo, northeast of Moscow, overturned a ruling that had kept Khatam Khadzhimatov, an ethnic Uzbek with Russian citizenship, in custody and ordered him released pending a rehearing of his case, said Yelena Ryabinina, an activist with a Civil Assistance refugee rights group, the AP reports. The prison guards initially refused to set Khadzhimatov free without obtaining permission from their superiors, but the suspect was later released, Ryabinina said. A.M.
