Five people killed in separate accidents in which cars crash into houses in U.S. state

Five people died in two separate accidents in which cars veered off the road and crashed into houses in the U.S. state of Wisconsin.

Early Monday, a 77-year-old woman sleeping in her bed was killed when a car missed a turn in Oregon, Wisconsin and crashed through her bedroom wall, police said.

"She was thrown some distance from her bed," police Chief Douglas Pettit said.

The driver backed the vehicle out of the bedroom and fled, but officers found the car's license plate at the scene and arrested the 41-year-old driver at her home several blocks away, Pettit said.

The driver wasn't hurt. The car's speed was a factor in the crash, but it wasn't known if the driver had been drinking, Pettit said.

In Superior, Wisconsin, four elderly women were killed and an 89-year-old driver was seriously injured Saturday when a car sped through a stop sign, went airborne and flew into a house.

"We don't know if there was a mechanical issue with the vehicle or a health-related issue with the driver or what exactly happened," Sheriff Tom Dalbec said Monday. "There were no eyewitnesses."

None of the people in the house was injured, AP reported.
