Colin Moynihan becomes chairman of British Olympic Assotiation

Former Olympic rower and sports minister was elected Wednesday as chairman of the British Olympic Association, giving him a key role in preparations for the 2012 London Games.

Moynihan, 50, defeated former Olympic 400-meter hurdles champion David Hemery by a vote of 28-15. He will serve an initial three-year term, the AP reports.

Moynihan succeeds Craig Reedie, who is stepping down after 13 years as BOA chairman. He remains a member of the International Olympic Committee. Moynihan, sports minister from 1987-90 under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, won a silver medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics as cox to the men's eight. Hemery won gold in the 400 hurdles in Mexico City in 1968. As BOA chairman, Moynihan will sit on the board of London's organizing committee for the 2012 Olympics. Hemery and Albert Woods will serve as BOA vice chairmen. AM
