Ukrainian police question one-time head of former President staff

Viktor Medvedchuk, the one-time head of former President Leonid Kuchma's administration, questioned by Ukrainian police on Thursday in connection with an investigation into allegations of abuse of power.

Before the questioning in downtown Kiev, Medvedchuk, who now heads the opposition Ukrainian Socialist Party (United), said that "all who want information and clarifications will receive them."

He refused to elaborate, but told reporters he was "in a fighting mood" and that he had "plenty to say."

Police summoned Medvedchuk as part of an investigation into the awarding of medals and state honors to the ex-leader's associates.

Police also summoned Medvedchuk for questioning in July over the same matter. He did not appear, and his party accused police of persecuting the government's political opponents, reports the AP.
