A military plane took off Monday from Spain with emergency doctors, firefighters and medical supplies to help deal with the aftermath of the South-Asian earthquake that has killed at least 20,000 people.
The plane left the Torrejon de Ardoz air force base outside Madrid and was headed for Pakistan. Leire Pajin, secretary of state of Cooperation, said the team included 40 doctors and firefighters, as well as different emergency equipment.
She said another two planes, to Guatemala and El Salvador, were scheduled to leave later Monday to help the victims of deadly tropical storms in Central America, where storms have left more than 200 people dead. At least 79 people died in Guatemala, the majority of them in landslides.
Another two cargo shipments were to leave Tuesday, one for Pakistan and another to Guatemala, Pajin said.
