Six tons of cocaine seized on fishing boat in the Pacific

The U.S. Coast Guard seized 6 metric tons from a Colombian-flagged fishing boat on intelligence supplied by the Colombian Navy.

The fishing boat, called Danny Ivan, had sailed from the Colombian port of Buenaventura and was boarded 530 miles from shore in the Pacific Ocean, in international waters.

The cocaine, worth US$150 million, was found on Tuesday hidden in the Danny Ivan's engine room and in its refrigeration units, Pena said. Details on which U.S. Coast Guard unit participated in the operation and precisely where the suspected smugglers would be taken were not immediately available.

Colombia produces most of the world's cocaine. The United States is the world's top cocaine-consuming nation, the AP reports.
