Bomb explodes at Kuwaiti information office in Lebanon

A parcel bomb wounded two people in the Kuwaiti Embassy's information office on Monday, in the second blast in the Lebanese capital in four days.

The bomb exploded as Hussam al-Jamal, a Kuwaiti, was opening a parcel at the information office in Sanayeh district, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Al-Jamal was wounded in the face and rushed to the American University of Beirut Hospital, the officials said. Another man, Ayyas al-Alayli, who was standing next to al-Jamal when the blast occurred, was also wounded and taken to hospital.

Lebanon's official National News Agency reported both men worked for the official Kuwaiti News Agency, KUNA. However, an editor at KUNA in Kuwait City said neither man worked for the agency. They work for the Information Office, which falls under Kuwait's Information Ministry, said the editor, speaking on condition of anonymity as she was not authorized to talk to the press.

She added that KUNA's office in Beirut is in the same building as the Information Office.

On Friday night, a bomb exploded in the Beirut neighborhood of Ashrafiya, killing one person and wounding 23 others.

Lebanon has suffered a series of mysterious bombings since a massive explosion killed former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and 20 other people on Feb. 14. The bombs have killed at least two anti-Syrian activists and have often exploded late at night in Christian parts of the city. Ashrafiya is a predominantly Christian district but Sanayeh is not.

Prime Minister Fuad Saniora was quoted Sunday as saying the perpetrators of the bomb attacks aimed to undermine Lebanon's security and torpedo the U.N. inquiry into Hariri's assassination, the AP reports.
