Nigeria gives aid to tsunami, hurricane victims

Nigeria gave US$6 million (Ђ4.9 million) to victims of the tsunami and Hurricane Katrina, winning praise from U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan for its example of a developing country giving aid to other developing countries and even a wealthy one. President Olusegun Obasanjo of the oil-rich West African nation gave a check for US$5 million (Ђ4.1 million) on Saturday to the U.N. Tsunami Relief Fund, money he said came from voluntary contributions from Nigerian people, according to a statement from the U.N. spokesman.

Nigeria already has donated US$1 million (Ђ800,000) to help victims of Hurricane Katrina in the United States, it said. "The secretary-general feels that this donation from a developing country for the benefit of many victims of last year's tsunami is a laudable example of international solidarity," the statement said.
