Portuguese police seized 2,600 kilograms of hashish

Police said they seized 2,600 kilograms (5,700 pounds) of hashish concealed in the back of a truck Friday and arrested a Portuguese man after firing shots during a high-speed chase.

Detectives in Faro, a city on the Algarve coast about 200 kilometers (120 miles) south of Lisbon, approached the truck around dawn, a police statement said.

The driver rammed a police car before speeding off. Detectives fired shots and forced the man to pull over, the statement said without providing further details.

The truck contained 75 large bales of hashish, according to the statement.

Police believe the man, whose name was not provided, was taking the hashish to southern Spain. He was due to appear in court later Friday.
