Fire broke in Frejus tunnel linking France and Italy

A small fire broke out on a truck in the Frejus tunnel linking France and Italy under the Alps, shutting down vehicle traffic Tuesday for about two hours, police said.

The new fire in the tunnel closed for two months this summer after a deadly blaze was quickly brought under control, police said. No one was injured.

The tunnel was shut to traffic June 4 after two truck drivers, both from Slovakia, were killed in a fire thought to have started after a tractor-trailer carrying tires from France to Italy burst into flames inside the tunnel. It reopened in early August after safety inspections.

The 13-kilometer (eight-mile) tunnel links Modane, France, and Bardonecchia, Italy.
