London bomb suspect caught by Zambia

A suspect in connection with London bombings has been arrested in Zambia. The authorities say he is of Briton nationality and might be concerned with Al-Qaida.

The detainee, identified as Rashid Aswat, 31, was detained in the Zambian border town of Livingstone after he crossed from Zimbabwe, the AP quoted an unnamed Zambian official as saying. No further details were given.

Zambian police spokesperson Brenda Muntemba told Xinhua that she does not have information on the case, which she said is being handled by the office of the president.

Aswat, a British citizen of Indian descent, was detained last week, the Los Angeles Times says.

According to the reports, Aswat caught the attention of police when it was discovered that about 20 calls have been placed from his cell phone to some of the four bombers known to investigators.

US authorities want to question him about a 1999 plot to set up an al-Qaida.

No comments were available from the State House by the press time.
