US praised Philippines’ Arroyo for admitting error

The United States claimed it supports transparency, accountability and rule of law in the Philippines after the sensational TV-speech of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, during which she admitted she had had a talk with an election official about her hopes for a million-vote margin in last year's presidential election.

In a one-paragraph statement in reaction to Arroyo's speech the US embassy noticed, that the United States "have repeatedly said that the search for truth is always a good thing as is also abiding by the constitution and due process," reports Xinhua.

At the same time, opponents of President Arroyo stepped up calls for an impeachment of Arroyo on Tuesday after she admitted her error.

A lawyer critical of the government, Oliver Lozano, filed an impeachment complaint against Arroyo at the House of Representatives on Monday, calling her a "bogus president" while accusing her of violating the constitution by cheating in the elections and betraying the public's trust.

The opposition also accuses Arroyo's son and brother-in-law of taking payoffs from illegal gambling.

But according to ABS CBN News, Philippines, analysts believe now, that the opposition has no the strength to impeach President Arroyo, as well as no popular support can be gained now as it was in 2001 with Joseph Estrada.
