33 major military installations are to be closed

The Pentagon on Friday recommended closing 33 major military installations in the United States in a realignment that apparently also would cut 29,000 military and &to=http:// english.pravda.ru/main/2001/11/02/19982.html ' target=_blank>civilian jobs.

The 28-page list of recommended changes appeared to show a net loss of 10,782 military positions and 18,223 civilian positions, with 2,818 added contractor posts created.

Military officials said the document also called for closing or realigning 775 smaller military locations, tells the CNN News. The list was sent to the nine-member Base Realignment and Closure Commission, known as BRAC, on Friday. Members of Congress also got advance copies of the report.

The Pentagon's list was delivered to Capitol Hill earlier Friday morning for distribution to lawmakers.

Rumsfeld's plan calls for a massive shift of U.S. forces that would result in a net loss of 29,005 military and civilian jobs at domestic installations. Overall, he proposes pulling 218,570 military and civilian positions out of some U.S. bases while adding 189,565 positions to others.

The closures and downsizings would occur over six years starting in 2006.
