Kofi Annan: options for Security Council reform

United Nations Secretary General &to=http:// english.pravda.ru/main/2002/11/21/39746.html ' target=_blank>Kofi Annan on Thursday suggested that the next Secretary General would be from Asia. His term will end next year.

The previous UN Secretary General from Asia was U Thant. Thant was from Myanmar and served as the United Nations Secretary General for a decade from 1961.

Annan said, "The Secretary General is elected on a rotational basis. There is a general sense that next time it would be from Asia." He commented while holding a press conference at Indian capital New Delhi at the end of his three-day visit.

Annan also said that Thailand’s deputy Prime Minister &to=http:// english.pravda.ru/world/2003/06/20/48497.html ' target=_blank>Surakiart Sathirathai has already announced his candidature for the key position in the United Nations. He views Sathirathai as the potent candidate for the position, as Thailand’s deputy Prime Minister has got the backing of the ASEAN alliance, reports All Headline News.
