Opposition plans new demonstrations in Kiev

Supporters of opposition candidate Viktor Yushchenko, who declared himself President-elect yesterday, plan to begin a demonstration near the office of the presidential administration in Kiev.

Representatives of &to=http://newsfromrussia.com/world/2004/11/24/57252.html' target=_blank>Yushchenko told RBC that tens of thousands of people were expected to take part in the protests. At present, there are several thousand people near the office of the presidential administration.

Yesterday Yushchenko promised his voters that his team would announce some initiatives intended to resolve the crisis that had emerged in the country after the second round of presidential elections today.

As reported earlier, according to information from the election commission, Yushchenko received 46.71 percent of the votes in the second round, and his rival, &to=http://english.pravda.ru/cis/2002/12/10/40604.html' target=_blank>Viktor Yanukovich, received 49.39 percent. However, the opposition believes the elections were rigged. Thousands of Yushchenko's supporters have been demonstrating in Kiev and in the west of Ukraine since November 22, demanding the recognition of their candidate's victory. At the same time supporters of Yanukovich are demonstrating in eastern Ukraine.
