Estonia consumers hurry to buy software before EU entry and a rise in prices

Software prices in Estonia are expected to rise by as much as 40% when the country enters the European Union on May 1, according to the newspaper SL Хhtuleht.

According to the newspaper, Microsoft and Adobe software prices are expected to rise between 20% and 40%, while the average price of monitors manufactured outside the EU is expected to be up 14% and average printer prices by several percentage points.

According to the newspaper Дripдev, Estonia's computer outlets, as well as merchants generally, are experiencing a boom in sales spurred by expected prices rises after May 1. Combined sales of the computer firms GNT Eesti, TD Baltic, ELKO Eesti and Asbis Baltic came to approximately euro 7.5 million in March, an increase of 50% from March 2003. Production of computers in Estonia was reported up 46%, year-to-year, for March.
