Humanitarian catastrophe in Iraq

Ella Pamfilova, head of the human rights commission under the Russian president, has called on the UN to take immediate measures to stop violence in Iraq.

"It is absolutely clear that a humanitarian catastrophe has erupted in Iraq anew, though in a larger scale this time. The United States as an occupant country is not fulfilling its obligations in line with Resolution 1483 of the UN Security Council," Ms. Pamfilova told reporters on Saturday.

She continued that this related to the siege of cities, the limitations of peaceful citizens' movements, and their involvement in the mutual confrontation.

It is the UN's competence to address [these problems] and not to "pull the chestnuts out of the fire for the USA," said Ms. Pamfilova.
