North Ossetian police placed on high alert

The police in North Ossetia (a republic of the Russian Federation) have been placed on high alert since Monday.

The republic's Interior Minister Kazbek Dzantiyev told RIA Novosti that "special attention has been paid to the posts at the Russian-Georgian border." "The police stations must toughen control of cargoes and people crossing the border and the check points," the minister believes.

"Stronger control does not imply any limitations, its only aim is to ensure stability in the border region," he specified.

Dzantiyev also said he "keeps permanent contact with law-enforcement structures in South Ossetia (a republic of Georgia) in view of the events in Tbilisi." At the present time the situation in South Ossetia and at its administrative borders is stable, he added.

The guarding of the Russian-Georgian frontier goes on as usual, without any accidents and in accordance with the earlier adopted decisions for autumn and winter, the press service of the North Caucasian regional frontier department of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) told RIA Novosti.

The frontier guards in all sections of the border with Georgia, especially in the Abkhazian and the South Ossetian sections, "are keeping a close eye on the latest events in Georgia," said the press service.

"There is no reason to believe that the political situation in the adjoining state will influence the work of the Russian frontier guards," underscored the press service.
