Armenian government to clear mines on border with Azerbaijan

The Armenian government allotted USD 27 thousand to the country's Defense Ministry to clear mines on the arable land on the border with Azerbaijan. According to Rosbalt during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the Armenian army mined the border regions of Syunik and Tavush.

However, after military activity in the conflict ended in 1994 the lands in the regions, nevertheless, remained mined. Now the government believes that the land would have more economically advantageous uses, mainly agricultural, if the land were cleared of the mines. According to members of the government, clearing the lands of the mines will help the regions attract investment and have a large moral and psychological impact on the local community.
