Unemployment prevents immigrants from learning Estonian

Unemployment is preventing people from learning Estonian. This was reported today by Estonian newspaper Postimees. Of those who have emigrated to Estonia over the last four years 12 thousand adults and 5 thousand children have managed to study the Estonian language at a low price or even for free. However, the newspaper stresses that despite the intensive study programme, if a person is unable to find employment then learning Estonian is of little use to him. 'People are therefore losing all motivation to learn the national language,' the newspaper concluded.

8-9% of the adult population of Estonia are currently unemployed. Many of these people are immigrants.
