RIO Group on UN role in counter-terrorism

Lima hosted consultations between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Yuri Fedotov and his three counterparts from the Rio Group.

"We discussed a wide range of issues including the UN role in countering new threats and challenges", first of all, international terrorism, Yuri Fedotov told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.

The talks also focused on "the UN reform and its peacekeeping and security activities and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction", he added.

According to the Russian diplomat, "the consultations were very productive and we achieved mutual understanding on the necessity of further dialogue at different levels".

"Russia and Latin America have common positions on many issues - we come out for the UN central role in modern international relations and strict observation of the international law principles," Yuri Fedotov concluded.

The Rio Group is the largest organisation in Latin America uniting 19 countries. The Rio Group founded in 1986 included the countries of Central and South America (without Cuba) and is the only political organisation of the Western hemisphere which does not involve the United States.

Today the Rio Group is coordinated by Brazil, Peru and Costa Rica.
