Russian Pacific Fleet battle ships pay unofficial visit to Hawaii

On Friday flotilla of Russian Pacific Fleet military vessels arrives with an unofficial visit at the US Naval base Pearl Harbour on Hawaii. This was disclosed to RIA Novosti on Friday in the Pacific Fleet headquarters.

The flotilla consists of anti-submarine vessel "Marshal Shaposhnikov" /missile frigate - under the NATO classification/ and auxiliary oiler "Pechenga".

The flotilla sails under the flag of Pacific Fleet Deputy Commander, Vice Admiral Viktor Mardusin.

Russian sailors in the course of the visit will meet with their American colleagues, will get a chance to get to know the American history and culture and will visit Honolulu.

After the visit the Pacific Fleet flotilla will participate in the Russo-American exercises on communications and manoeuvring in order to improve skills of joint security navigation. These skills might be necessary in the future in the course of the possible operations on the prevention of piracy and terrorism in the zone of the two fleets' activity.

The visit is aimed to strengthen connections and further develop relations between the two fleets in the light of the recent meeting between the two countries' leaders, as well as to provide the stability and bilateral co-operation in the Asian Pacific region, the Pacific Fleet headquarters reported.

It is the second visit to Hawaii. The first visit was held in 1995. The US Navy vessels have already paid six visits to Vladivostok.
