Georgian and Abkhazian specialists will demine the Kodor ravine, located within the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict zone, in the near future. As a Rosbalt correspondent was informed by the Georgian Defence Ministry, negotiations have been going on for the last two years about demining the ravine. Russian peacekeepers currently located in the region will not participate in the operation.
The ministry spokesman said that civilians have frequently been injured by mines placed in the ravine during the Georgian-Abkhazian military conflict. The most recent occurrence happened last week. A local man was injured and then transported by helicopter to a hospital in Zugdidi in western Georgia by Russian peacekeepers. Doctors had to amputate both his legs.
