US aims to democratize Nagorno-Karabakh Region

The US Democracy Transition Institute is interested in the spreading of democracy in the Caucasus region, which ought to become a part of Europe, said Institute Director Bruce Jackson, according to Arminfo agency.

Jackson said that over the course of the next eight years the institute will engage in solving the problems of democracy, which have developed over the past ten years in the CIS. 'We shall continue our cooperation with countries which want to integrate into the European Union,' he said pointing out at the same time the large amount of attention placed on the necessity of solving two problems - the blockade of the Turkish-Armenia border and the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Jackson told journalists that he visited Baku, Tbilisi and Yerevan where he discussed regional problems. He also met with the Nagorno-Karabakh President Arkady Gukasyan, members of parliament, defence leaders and journalists. He said that he intends to cooperate with European non-government structures in the area of deepening democractic processes in the Caucasus.
